Tanuki – Kona 2011 Review

Tanuki DeluxeNeed a bike that is beefy enough to do it all? To be able to take you across the barren sandstone of Moab,to the root covered single track of Colorado? Then here is the bike for you.  New for 2011, Kona has modified the ever popular Dawg. and combined it with the  lightweight long travel One20.  This has created an amazing trail creature that can run through an incredibly diverse field of trail conditions. It features a 130mm of  travel front and back. A simplified body design that is as light (30-pounds) as it is beautiful. The Tanuki comes in seven different sizes to ensure a perfect fit. I don’t know who came up with the idea of using the name Tanuki, but if you were wondering what it is. Based off the info I found it is a Japanese creature with giant male parts. A few Thoughts about the Kona Tunaki 2011 Bike.
The frame design fills a lot like Kona’s higher-end bikes, but with simpler suspension

While the top bikes in the Kona range now get their multi-shock Magic Link suspension, the Tanuki keeps it simple. It does get some real benefits from the Magic bikes though – its tapered head tube, machined rocker link and chunky seat stays are all shared with the Cadabra bikes. There is no way you are going to get a auto seat drop on this bike. The overall frame geometric is built from a less expensive 7000 series, where the high-end is built for scandium alloy.
The chainstays mount lower on the seat tube, just above the bottom bracket. This is where conventional Konas have always connected causing a very active feel. Their cage placing is great for keeping bottles higher on the frame and out of the dirt. Kona pivots also have a great long-term reputation. There’s not much height clearance above the tire I have never seemed to have an issue with this though.

My recommendation. This bike is that for the money a good bike. It has a nice feel on the level ground. It does lose some momentum on uphill pedaling it would great if it had a lock out for the rear shock.

For the money an awesome bike.
